THE 'HOW DO' SOCIETY
John Harrison of the Army and Navy Hotel, applied for an extension on the occasion of a supper in connection with the 'How Do' Society.
In explanation of this curious title, the applicant said they met every Sunday night, and anyone swearing or making use of improper language was fined. This took place every Sunday night, and according to the applicant, "had a tendency to put a check on the men."
The members were about to have a supper, and he asked for an hour's extension. The Mayor asked, "Do you allow swearing any other night?" and he replied, "No Sir. But we put particular check on this particular night. If they come out with any vulgar language at all they are fined for it."
The application was refused.
