NORTH LANCASHIRE HOTEL, Friargate

53 Friargate
*
A.K.A.  "LIVER HOTEL"  and
"BLACKBURN HOTEL"
and "PRINCE PATRICK HOTEL"
*
This is the site of the (Royal) North Lancashire Hotel. It looks as though it's been
provided with a new red-brick facia.
*
It seems ironic that a home-brew shop should be standing in the hotel's stead,
for, by all accounts, there was always "Something Brewing" at the North Lancashire.
- And it wasn't always beer! -

In 1860, William Baines went to become the Innkeeper of the "East Lancashire Hotel"
at  13 Butler Street. I wonder, in view of the similarity in the name, whether they
were in common ownership?

ROBBERY FROM PUBLIC HOUSE
Mary Ann Hughes, remanded from Monday,
was charged with stealing several drinking
glasses, a silver tea-spoon, a sheet, and a
pot china ornament, the property of Mr.
Holding, landlord of the Liver Inn, Friargate.
After the evidence for the prosecution had
been repeated, the prisoner called her daughter,
who swore that the sheet and ornament were
her mother's property.
The prisoner was ultimately committed to the
Sessions for trial.

"PLAYING AT SOLDIERS" - A CAUTION
At the Police Court on Monday, a young man named William
Pilkington, a fishmonger, was charged with enlisting in the
Royal Marines, under false representations.
Sergeant Dakes stated that, on the 9th inst., he met the
prisoner at the Liver Inn, Friargate. Another person
asked if he would enlist him, to which he replied he would not;
but he added that he would enlist the prisoner, and the
latter replied that he had been enlisted seven times, and
had paid the smart.

The same evening he met him again in the Liver Inn, where
he measured him &c., and then gave him a shilling. He
gave the name William Jones.

A notice paper was served on him to appear the following
day, which he had not attended to. The Bench committed
the prisoner to gaol for 3 months, as a rogue and vagabond.

NORTH LANCASHIRE HOTEL, FRIARGATE
P. O'MALLEY
Begs to inform his friends and the public
generally that he has just become
proprietor of the above INN; that he has
largely improved the establishment; and
that it is his intention to conduct it with the
utmost respectability, and supply none but
genuine liquors.
AN EXCELLENT BAR PARLOUR;
FIRST CLASS WINES, SPIRITS, CIGARS, &c.

One of the signs of a well-run, orderly house, are relatively few landlords
over a long period of time.
*
Conversely, you have the likes of the North Lancashire Hotel, where a week must
have seemed like a lifetime!
*
One of the exceptions to the rule, was the 'rule' of Peter O'Malley, a large,
full-bearded Irishman, who seemed to have the measure of his clientele. It
seemed to be not unusual for licensees who were in trouble with the law, and
feared poor publicity for their houses, to 'mis-lead' the courts to avoid such
publicity.
*
Such was the case when Peter O'Malley was summoned for allowing dominoes
to be played in his house. He gave the name of it to the court as
"PRINCE PATRICK'S HOTEL"
which seemed strange, until I found that his father, Patrick, was living
with him (and probably playing dominoes). Hence Prince Patrick's Hotel.

PASSING BASE COIN
An old man, named John Thompson, was charged
with attempting to pass a base coin at the North
Lancashire Hotel, Friargate. It appears that on
Wednesday, at about 3.30 in the afternoon, the
prisoner called for a glass, and gave a bad two
shilling piece.
Patrick O'Malley, the landlord, doubting the coin,
took it to his son, Peter, who told his father to go
for a policeman.
In the absence of the landlord, the prisoner
deposited 11 other pieces in a tub in the bar.

"RINGING THE CHANGES"
John Holden and Ellen Holden, on remand, were charged
with passing counterfeit coins at the house of Mr. O'Malley,
the Liver Hotel, Friargate. The female prisoner was discharged,
as no evidence was offered against her.

In addition to the evidence already given, Mr. W. Brown,
Silversmith, Fishergate, was called, and said he had examined
the florin which the prisoner had attempted to pass, as well as
eleven others which were found in his possession.

He found them all to be base and counterfeit, and they bore
the year of 1870, with the superscription of Queen Victoria.
The coins were all from the same mould. The prisoner was
committed to the Lancaster Assizes for trial.

The Preston Home Rule Association
On Sunday evening, a meeting of the members
of the Home Rule Association recently formed
in this town, was held at the house of Mr. O'Malley,
North Lancashire Hotel, Friargate. The room was
crowded, and the chair was occupied by Mr. Gerarty.
Several addresses in favour of Home Rule were
given, and at the close of the meeting a large
number of additional members were enrolled.

VIOLENT ASSAULT
James Hewing, a rough character, was summoned
for assaulting Peter O'Malley, the landlord of the
North Lancashire Hotel, Friargate. On Friday
afternoon, the 8th, O'Malley had to turn Hewing out
of the house. The defendant went back several
times, and once he pulled the complainant out of
his house by his beard, and kicked him on the legs
till a policeman came up and took him into custody.
He was gaoled for two months with hard labour.

A PUBLIC HOUSE BRAWL
Mary Ann Hayes, landlady of the North
Lancashire Hotel, Friargate, summoned Thomas
Hodgson for assaulting her, on the 1st April.
The complainant said that the defendant struck
her on the breast, and seized her by the throat.
However, his mother had been to the house
that morning, and begged her to withdraw the
charge. She would do so if the defendant
would promise not to annoy her again.

The Chairman asked the defendant if he would
do that and pay the costs? The defendant said
he did not wish to pay a farthing. The complainant
herself had struck him in the presence of P.C. Lord,
who told her she must not do that again in his presence.

The police were never out of the house. The defendant
said that she struck him often, and she replied,
"Well, it serves you right" (laughter in court)

Fined 11shillings and costs, or 14 days.

A TROUBLESOME FELLOW
Thomas Hodgson was charged with refusing
to leave licensed premises and assaulting the
police. P.C.Lee said he was called to the North
Lancashire Hotel, Friargate, the previous night,
and when forcibly ejecting the prisoner he was
kicked on the shins and struck in the face.
The prisoner said that the police had a spite
against him. He was charged not long ago with
annoying the landlady, Mary Ann Hayes, and
she said he was now worse than ever. He was
sent to gaol for one month with hard labour.
After leaving the court the prisoner  commenced
crying.
