CHURCH HOTEL, North Road / Lancaster Road

CHURCH HOTEL   #
133 / 134 North Road
- Later 74 Lancaster Road / 331 North Road

Address given as Park Lane in the 1841 and 1851 censuses.
*
c. 1965 The Church Hotel is on the right with English Martyrs Church in the background. Dominating the centre of the image is a mens urinal. A common sight in Preston up to the mid 60's they were known locally as 'Iron Dukes' probably named after the 'Audacious' class battleship HMS Iron Duke launched in 1870. (Flickr)
However, there was a beerhouse higher up North Road called the Iron Duke. That acquired its name in 1860 at the latest. I think they were named after the Duke of Wellington.
*
*
North Road is on the left of the "Church Hotel", and Lancaster Road on the right.
*
In the Preston Chronicle of 7th November 1868, there appeared a notice which read:
"Best bar-parlour in North Lancashire. Collection of original engravings by Hogarth,
Bartolozzi and other Old Masters."

NEW HOUSE TO LET
Newly erected INN or PUBLIC HOUSE (recently licensed) called
the "CHURCH HOUSE", situate at the junction of the Great North
and Lancaster Roads in Preston.
The House contains 11 rooms, with a Gig House, Yard and Stabling.
-
Further particulars apply to Richard Duckett, the Owner, Auctioneer, Preston.
Preston Chronicle  18th October 1839
This advertisement refers to "Church House" - and, indeed, it was right outside
St. Thomas's Church, providing stabling for some members of the congregation no doubt -
but I don't think it was ever called by this name. However, about ten years earlier, another
public house opened on Lancaster Road which was named "Church House Tavern"

I've put this in purely because it mentions the Church
Hotel. I don't think he was ever the landlord there,
perhaps just a lodger?

Before Joseph Ware took over at the Church Hotel, he was
a fishmonger on the corner of Church Street and Lancaster
Road. These two rival fish dealer's adverts would indicate
a bit of rivalry. Don't forget, Joseph Ware was born in
Hackney, in the East End of London.
