BREACH OF THE LICENSING ACT
James Gardner, landlord of the Birley's Arms, New Hall Lane, was summoned
for supplying drink during prohibited hours, and James Oldham, barber, for
aiding and abetting. PC's Forrest, Peters and Swarbrick said they were near the
Birley Arms at 11.55pm on the night in question, when they saw the defendant, Oldham,
go to the house with a jug, knock at the door, and enter the house. In about
ten minutes he came out again, with the jug still in his hand. On stopping him,
and examining the contents they found them to be beer. On going back to the
public house, Gardner said, "I filled nowt." It was alleged that the beer had been
bought before 11 o'clock.
The Bench saw no reason to doubt the uniform testimony of the three constables,
and fined Gardnber in the sum of £5 and costs, and ordered the licence to be endorsed.
Oldham  was fined 10s. and costs.

AN APPEAL TO THE EDITOR OF 'THE ERA'

Sir, A terrble fire occurred last week at Mr. W. Miller's, Birley Arms
Hotel, Preston, completely gutting the building and destroying the whole of
the contents. The landlord and his wife and family have now no home,
no furniture, no clothing, and no money, and worse than the pecuniary
loss, is the loss of his little daughter Jane, aged 11 years, burnt to death.

I am giving Mr. Miller a benefit at the Gaiety Theatre, but I wish to ask
my brother and sister professionals to assist Macolla, the left-handed
Paganini. This young man was living at Miller's house, and to save his
life, he dropped from the third storey window, and, alighting on his heels,
unfortunately smashed the bones of both ankles. I went to see him
yesterday at the Infirmary. I am afraid he will henceforth be a
cripple (let us hope not).
All his clothing, music, and travelling basket were destroyed,
leaving him entirely destitute. If ever there was a truly deserving case
for immediate relief, this is one. Subscriptions may be sent to, and
will be duly acknowledged by -
                                      Yours truly
                                                  HARRY YORKE
