OFFENCE AGAINST THE SUNDAY ACT.
Jane Hodson, landlady of the Tom Bowling beerhouse, Savoy Street, near Marsh Lane, was charged with having, on the 7th November, had her house open for the sale of drink during prohibited hours.
Police Detective Williams said that on Sunday morning, the 7th November, he, along with P.D. Dawson, watched the Tom Bowling beerhouse, kept by Jane Hodson.
At five minutes past eight o'clock they saw eight men let in by the beerhouse door, and shortly after they were all let out. In a few minutes afterwards one man and two women were admitted, and soon came out. At a quarter past another four men were admitted in a similar manner, and P.D. Dawson saw them being supplied with ale by a girl named Catherine Fogerty and the landlady. On seeing Dawson, the men handed the ale back again, which was carried into the house.
The beerhouse door was then opened, and the four men ran out. Dawson and Williams then went into the house, and saw the landlady in the act of carrying four glasses, each of which contained a small quantity of ale. They told the landlady that they would report her for admitted 13 men and 2 women into her beerhouse during prohibited hours, when she replied that they were all regular customers. They could not find any of the men who were in.
P.D. Dawson corroborated Williams evidence.
Mr. Cunningham said that the woman had kept the house since 1867. She was summoned on the 13th September, 1868, for the same offence with which she was then charged, and was also on the 13th ult., when the case was dismissed on the payment of costs.
The magistrates said that as the woman had been convicted twice before they would fine her 40s. and costs, or, in default of payment, send her for a month to the House of Correction, with hard labour. The magistrates at the same time informed her that the offence would be recorded, and that, if she was up again, her licence would be taken from her.

ROBERT HODGSON, of the "TOM BOWLING"
off Savoy Street, was objected to, on the grounds
of non-residence. A person holding a licence for the
sale of beer should actually reside upon the premises
for which the licence was granted.

Hodgson said he had made arrangements to reside
on the premises. Formerly the house was not large
enough for the entire family, but now the owner of
the property had arranged to increase it by adding
the adjoining house. Under the new arrangement
he would pay £26 per year, and would be the actual
resident/
The Magistrates refused the licence.
