ASSAULTING A POLICE CONSTABLE
Joseph POTTER, landlord of the Pet Dogs Inn,
Walker Street, on remand, was summoned for assaulting
 P.C. Dawson on Friday last.

Potter was having a quarrel with his wife, when
Dawson
interfered. Potter struck him and they had a
struggle together, during which they struck each
other several times.

The Bench dismissed the case.

BREACH OF LICENSING ACT
Richard Moss, landlord of the Pet Dogs beerhouse,
corner of Snow Hill and Walker Street, was
summoned for a breach of the Licensing Act.
P.S. Byrns said that on the night of 15th February,
he was on duty in Walker Street, and that shortly
before 1 o'clock he saw two women go into the
beerhouse named, and come out with a quart of
beer. He went to the landlady and told her what
he had seen, but she denied it.

In court it was said that the defendant was having
a little jollification with some friends in the house in
the same street, and that the defendant had sent for
some beer from his own house.

Moss admitted the offence in court, and was fined
20 shillings plus costs.

The Oddfellows' Arms, Park Road, owned by the Manchester Brewery Co., Ltd., tenanted by Mary Grace Atkinson, Inspector Clayton spoke of the house as being fairly clean throughout and in good repair. There were no convictions, but since 1900 there had been nine transfers. This house had more transfers than any other house in the town.
According to the landlord, the house did business to the extent of four barrels, six dozen pint bottles, and twelve dozen half-pint bottles of beer.
Mr. Blackhurst, for the landlord: 'The present tenant had certainly improved the house considerably, and that the fact that there had been so many transfers since 1900 was one of the weakest objections to the licence so far put forward at the Sessions."

ASSAULT
On Monday last, Mr. Samuel Wood, of the New Cock
Inn, appeared at the Town Hall, to answer a summons
alleging an assault on John Beardswood.

The complainant said that on Thursday, the first day
of polling, he was at the bottom of New Cock Yard,
when Mr. Wood came up to him, and without
provocation on his part, struck him with a stick
and broke his arm.

A party of the Blues, whose principal rendez-vous
was in the Cock Yard, said he came up to him and
severely kicked and struck him, threatening to kill
him - so that for some time he was insensible.

A woman who lived close by said she saw the defendant
going away from the spot, but did not see the blow struck.

Several witnesses were examined for the defence, but
did not disprove the fact sworn to, and the defendant was
bound over to answer the charge at the Sessions.

Taken from a Preston Guardian in the 1940's
It shows the landlord, Richard 'Dick' Sumner, inspecting
the enclosure for cocks used in cock-fighting.

It was rumoured locally that when the inn was demolished to make way for Boots the Chemist, there was still a Cock-pit
on the first floor of the pub - as was this enclosure.

You'll recognise the landlord from the other article about him higher up this page.
