YORK CASTLE, 101 Adelphi Street

YORK CASTLE  #
101 Adelphi Street
 c. 1899 - William and Catherine NEWBY are standing together, just to the right of
the door. William was a hansom cab driver.  Later, the Co-op, took over the York Castle
and the shop you can (just) see next door (to the left), and opened a store.
I have a feeling that number 100 was already owned by the Co-op.
*

The "Britannia" can just be seen to the left of the arch legs.
The "York Castle" is directly above the chair, right, and the
"Victoria " is to the right of the right leg of the arch.
The image is taken from Preston Digital Archives Flickr
account, visit here
That site says the image is taken looking towards the town centre.
I disagree; I think it's taken looking away from the town centre, and towards Plungington Road.

A renewal of the licence for the SLIP INN was
applied for. The house had been closed for two months,
and that its' owners (Threlfall and Co. Wine Merchants,
proposed putting it in the charge of one of their own men,
named Alfred Sergeant, until a suitable tenant could be
got.  Sergeant gave evidence of previous experience,
and a licence was granted.

*
Preston Chronicle  27th August 1870
*
The licence of the SLIP INN, Turks Head Yard, was
objected to on the grounds that Joseph Redhead, the
landlord, let the adjoining house as a brothel. His
defence said that Redhead had left the Inn, and
therefore the objection had been done away with.

Later in the article it says "the licence of the Slip Inn,
kept by Joseph Redhead, was renewed."
Preston Chronicle  1st September 1877

- possibly it meant that he had left the house that
was being used as a brothel?

PS. Remember, the name of the house was changed in
1874. Perhaps using the previous name to avoid more
bad publicity?

SUSPECTED INFANTICIDE AT PRESTON
A few days ago, Mrs. Margaret Robinson, keeper
of the Southgate Tavern, Preston, gave birth to a child
at the house of a friend, and when a medical man was
called in the child was dead, and he thought the skull
was fractured.

This being  rumoured abroad, the Coroner ordered an
exhumation of the body, as it had been buried at the cemetery,
but Mr. Marshall, M.D., on examining it, said that the
child had never breathed, and at an inquest held on
Wednesday last, the jury returned a verdict of "Stillborn."

STEALING BOOTS
At the borough police court, Kate MacDonald
was charged with stealing a pair of boots, the
property of Sarah Hindley, of the Swan Inn,
New Street, with whom the prisoner had been
living as a servant.

Mrs. Hindley said that when she took her into
her employ she was of good character, but that
she had discharged her because she found her
in the cellar helping herself to the ale. She
discharged her one day last week, and on Saturday
last, missed the boots in question. The prisoner
afterwards pawned the boots at the shop of
Mr. Alston, pawnbroker, Friargate.

The prisoner admitted her guilt, and begged the
bench to be lenient with her. She was committed
to prison for two months with hard labour.

ROBBERY BY A SERVANT
Kate MacDonald, a domestic servant, was charged with stealing a par of boots, value 12s 6d, the property of Sarah Hindley, of the Swan Inn, New Street. Mr Blackhurst prosecuted.
The prisoner had formerly acted as a domestic servant in the prosecutrix's house, but as she was rather too fond of helping herself to the contents of the barrels in the cellar, the prosecutrix was compelled to discharge her from her service.
On Saturday morning last, the prosecutrix missed a pair of boots, and as she suspected they had been stolen, she informed the police authorities of the circumstance.
The boots were found as the shop of Mr. Alston, pawnbroker, Friargate, where they had been pledged by the prisoner. This led to her apprehension. She pleaded guilty, and hoped that the Bench would deal leniently with her, as that was her first offence.
She was sent to prison for two months, with hard labour.
