YORK CASTLE #
101 Adelphi Street
c. 1899 - William and Catherine NEWBY are standing together, just to the right of
the door. William was a hansom cab driver. Later, the Co-op, took over the York Castle
and the shop you can (just) see next door (to the left), and opened a store.
I have a feeling that number 100 was already owned by the Co-op.

The "Britannia" can just be seen to the left of the arch legs.
The "York Castle" is directly above the chair, right, and the
"Victoria " is to the right of the right leg of the arch.

That site says the image is taken looking towards the town centre.
I disagree; I think it's taken looking away from the town centre, and towards Plungington Road.

William and Catherine Newby were my Great Grandparents and this was their local as they lived in nearby Haydock Street at that time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Paul
ReplyDeleteTwo years ago you sent me a link to a 1902 Guild photo on Flikr.
I've now added it, but taken issue with the direction the photo's
taken. I think it's taken looking away from the town centre.
A second opinion would be useful, but if I'm wrong, all my Adelphi
Street pub details are likely to be wrong as well!!!
I haven't catered for such a disaster!
Regards...........Steve H
I would entirely agree with you on that Steve. It is definitely a view looking northwards away from the town. I'll notify PDA and I'm sure that he will rectify the error forthwith.
