IRVINE BARTON was charged with selling ale at his house on
Sunday forenoon, the 21st October, after 11 o'clock.
The defence was that no ale was drawn after 10 o'clock,
Barton himself was not present.
This was a second offence, and the Mayor said that he was satisfied
that the ale had been sold, and that he was liable toa fine of
not exceeding £10. He should, however, mitigate it to the smallest amount,
in the hope that the warning would not be thrown away.
He was ordered to pay a fine of 40 shillings and costs of 10 shillings.

BEER HOUSE FINE
Yesterday, Irvine Barton, beerhouse keeper, Vicarage, was fined £5 and
costs for selling ale at the hour of half past one on Wednesday morning last -
the conviction being the second brought home to him within the last twelve months.

BEERHOUSE CONVICTION
Yesterday, Irvine Barton, beerseller at the Vicarage, was
convicted in the penalty of £5, for suffering drunkenness
and disorder on his premises, on Sunday last.

APPREHENSION OF WHOLESALE COINERS
A "navvie" calling himself John Smith, and
a woman named Ellen Healey, were charged
with coining. It appears that the constables,
in consequence of information they had
received, went to the lodgings of the prisoners,
at the Vicarage Inn.
On entering the room, the male prisoner
had a mould in his hand, but on seeing the
policeman he dashed it upon the ground, and
jumped upon it. He was instantly seized, and
the fragments of the mould, which were warm,
and counterfeit, were taken up. 3s. and 2s. 6d,
also warm, and counterfeit, were taken from
the cornice. One bad shilling was found on the
female prisoner. It was also discovered that a
base shilling had been paid by the prisoners to
the person with whome they lodged.
They were remanded for a week.

STEALING A SHAWL
On Thursday, a woman named Alice Gardner
was charged with stealing a shawl belonging
to the wife of William Cross of Albert Street.
The stolen article was taken, on Tuesday,
from the Vicarage Inn, and pledged at
Mr. J.M. Brandreth's pawn-shop by the
prisoner.
Committed for trial.

YOUTHFUL CRIMINAL
A boy named Irving Horum was brought up,
charged with stealing the sum of 21 shillings
from the shop of Susan Shepherd, confectioner,
Gin Bow Entry.
In the absence of Shepherd, the premises
were entered, and two five-shilling papers,
and 10 or 11 shillings, all in copper, were
stolen from the cupboard. On the following
Monday, Inspector Rigby saw the prisoner
putting something into a hole in the ground
near the Vicarage Inn. Horum, on seeing him,
decamped; and Rigby, on examining the place,
found 21 shillings in copper, including two
five-shilling papers, which were identified by
Mrs. Shepherd.
He apprehended the prisoner on the following
Thursday. Committed for trial.
