FALLING INTO A TUB OF BOILING LIQUOR
An inquest was held at the Infirmary, on Tuesday last, touching
the death of James Cook, 59 years of age, a brewer, who met his
death under rather lamentable circumstances. Witness, William
Kirkby said that on Friday, 7th April, he was in the brewhouse
belonging to the Moulders' Arms, Edmund Street, Preston, and
was assisting the deceased in brewing. The witness was taking
some liquor out of the boiler and placing it into a cooler, having
his back turned to the deceased, who was standing beside the
mash-tub, which was filled with boiling beer.
Suddenly he heard the deceased cry out, "Help," "Get me out," and
turning round saw the poor man had fallen into the mash-tub. He was
frightfully scalded about the upper part of the body, and on being taken
to the Infirmary died from the effects of the scalds the following day.
The jury returned a verdict of "accidental death."

BREACH OF THE LICENSING ACT
William Shaw, landlord of the Moulders' Arms beerhouse, Edmund Street, was summoned for having his house open during prohibited hours, on Sunday morning, about 8 o'clock; and John Stepford and John Sherliker were summoned for aiding and abetting at the same time and place. Mr. Parker prosecuted, and Mr. Edelston defended.
PC Forrest stated that on the day and time named, he, in company with other constables, was stationed in an unoccupied house near Shaw's premises, when he saw, at different times, no less than thirty-three persons, including the defendants Stepford and Sherliker, enter the beerhouse by the side door.
When the latter defendants went into the house, the witness followed, got their names, and told them that they would be reported.
On a sideboard in the bar, he saw seven pint pots containing small quantities of fresh beer. He told the landlord that he (the witness) had seen thirty-three persons enter his house during the morning. To this the landlord replied that there hadn't been so many.
Mr. Edelston, who appeared for the defendants, admitted the breach of the law, but stated in mitigation that Shaw had kept the house many years without being reported. The Bench fined the landlord 40 shillings and costs, and the other defendants were fined 5 shillings and costs.
