FIRE
Shortly after half past three on Thursday morning,
some night labourers in the employ of Mr. H. Ashcroft,
whilst working at the rear of the NEW DUKE beerhouse
in Edward Street, smelled burning.
The smoke and burning was traced to the mill of Messrs.
Blackburn and Son, siruated at the bottom of Edward
Street, facing the canal.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING
re: Construction of Corporation Street.
................Ald. Gilbertson moved that there
be purchased from Mr. Joseph Ashcroft, the
freehold property, consisting of a piece of land
with the beerhouse known as the "New Duke,"
and other buildings, being No. 15 and 16 Edward
Street, and 208 and 209 for £700. Mr Hibbert
seconded.
Preston Chronicle 27th October 1883
208 & 209 Where? I don't think I missed something, but I'll check at some point.
It certainly won't be Edward Street.

Preston Chronicle 4th October 1884
The last sentence in this piece would have put the
building on the corner of Edward Street and
Corporation Street (the new street).
Is this what became the "North End Hotel" ?
