GAS EXPLOSION
On the 27th April, an explosion of gas took place at
Mr. Rowland Parkinson's Frenchwood Tavern. The
house has lately undergone considerable alterations,
in the course of which one of the gas pipes in the bar
had been perforated by a nail, which was afterwards
extracted, and this allowed a free admission of gas.
The unpleasant smell occasioned a search with a piece
of lighted paper, and the consequence was that an
explosion took place. The damage was not very
extensive, although coupled with an explosion of
gunpowder, contained in a flask deposited in one of the
drawers of the bar, which together with the flask, was
shattered to pieces. The landlord, who was severely
scorched, had the presence of mind to turn off the main tap.
