BREWSTER LICENSING SESSIONS
Mr. Watson appeared for Thomas Byrne, who had been objected to by the police.
Police Detective Johnson said that he was present one Sunday at the man's house when there were two men in the back yard drinking ale, having entered by the front door. There had been a policeman put on there to watch the house, in order to prevent Sunday drinking. Mr. Watson said there was no offence against the new Act in this case, and the licence was granted.

BREWSTER LICENSING SESSIONS
In September 1870, Thomas Byrnes was objected to
for selling beer during prohibited hours. Police Detective
Dawson said that he had frequently seen the applicant's
wife cross over the street to a house in which were a number
of men. It was supposed that drink was carried over there,
and that it was being consumed there.

Mr. Watson, who appeared for the applicant, said, "There
is no act which prohibits a landlord from going out of his
house on a Sunday," a remark that caused much laughter.
The Police Officer replied, "I am not aware of any," causing
even more laughter.
