LONG PULL
James Richard Sharples was summoned for selling beer otherwise than by Imperial measure. Mr. Smith, who prosecuted said the offence was commonly known as the 'long pull.'
W.S. Simpson said that he followed a man named Rigby into the Rose Inn, Ribbleton. Rigby placed a jug on the bar and called for a pint of beer. The landlord pumped the pint direct, and witness, taking possession of the jug, asked the landlord for the measure. Sharples handed him the measure which was perfectly dry, and the witness, on using it, found that the beer served was nearly twice the quantity called for.
Mr. Blackhurst said that the defendant admitted breaking the law. He had only been in the trade for five weeks, and had not had the time to acquire a competent knowledge of the law as it affected the trade.
The Bench imposed a penalty of 5/- plus costs.
