SUNDAY DRINKING

John Culshaw, landlord of the Gordon Street Tavern beerhouse, was summoned for selling drink du ring prohibited hours on Sunday, the 9th inst; and Thomas Calvert, David Hothersall, Joseph Hothersall, and Walter Hothersall, were summoned for being concerned in the offence.

PCs Hope and Harrison were on duty on the day in question at 35 minutes past eleven o'clock, when they saw four men obtain admission by the vault door of the beerhouse. They went inside, when they saw the defendants with beer before them.

Mr. Edelston, for the defence, said the men were old friends of the landlord's. Mrs. Culshaw went out of the house at the time named, and when she came back she found the men in, and she thought she was doing no harm by giving her husband's friends a glass of beer.

Culshaw was fined 20 shillings and costs, in default 14 days; and the other defendants 5 shillings each and costs each.
