"There are far too many licences in this district," said Inspector Clayton, when giving evidence as to the objection to the renewal of the licence of the Clover Inn, owned by John James Duckett, Preston, and tenanted by Wm Marsden. The house, added the officer, had been newly cleaned through. It was entirely free, and let at a rental of £50 a year. When he visited the house on one occasion he found 27 people present.
Warrant Sergeant Simpson said that in seven visits he found 116 customers.
Mr. Ambler, for the owner, urged that the evidence of the police was itself sufficient to answer the objection that the house was not required. The attendance of customers was ample evidence as to the need for its existence.
