NEW HOUSE TO LET
Newly erected INN or PUBLIC HOUSE (recently licensed) called
the "CHURCH HOUSE", situate at the junction of the Great North
and Lancaster Roads in Preston.
The House contains 11 rooms, with a Gig House, Yard and Stabling.
-
Further particulars apply to Richard Duckett, the Owner, Auctioneer, Preston.
Preston Chronicle  18th October 1839
This advertisement refers to "Church House" - and, indeed, it was right outside
St. Thomas's Church, providing stabling for some members of the congregation no doubt -
but I don't think it was ever called by this name. However, about ten years earlier, another
public house opened on Lancaster Road which was named "Church House Tavern"

I've put this in purely because it mentions the Church
Hotel. I don't think he was ever the landlord there,
perhaps just a lodger?

Before Joseph Ware took over at the Church Hotel, he was
a fishmonger on the corner of Church Street and Lancaster
Road. These two rival fish dealer's adverts would indicate
a bit of rivalry. Don't forget, Joseph Ware was born in
Hackney, in the East End of London.
