MACHINE MAKERS' ARMS, North Road

MACHINE MAKERS' ARMS
Park Lane - the former name of:
North Road
*
Later adopted the name of the
"NEW INN"
The "MACHINE MAKERS' ARMS" became the "NEW INN" somewhere
between 1861 and 1871; but see the notes below, which would suggest that that

may NOT be the case.

MINE HOSTS:
1823                     William Hardwick
1836                     Thomas Meadows - Owned by Mr. C. Hardwick.

1841                     Lydia Ireland

1851 - 53              William Clark(e)
1853 - 58              William Clayton
1861 - 64              Mary Kellett

NOTES
By June 1843, Preston had left the Machine Makers' Arms, and become insolvent.

In the 1841 Census, Lydia's parents, William & Ellen were both listed, William as the publican.

Meager went to Clarence House in Grimshaw Street.

Referred to as the "New Inn" in the Preston Guardian of 26th January 1850, considerably earlier than the note below from 1871.

Again, in the newspapers of 8th March 1856, 13th September 1856, and 19th September 1857, William Clayton was said to be at the "New Inn".

In 1871, James O'Leary applied to the Court for permission to change the name of the pub from this to the "NEW INN."  In 1872, the Preston Chronicle referred to the premises as "JAMES O'LEARY'S INN"

It was noted as the "New Inn" in the 1861 census return.

I have notes taken from a legal document which indicates that the place was known as the "NEW INN" since 1862
