On Wednesday, John Wareing, landlord of the Old Royal George Inn, North Road, Preston, had a remarkable 'find'.
In a load of coal that had been brought from the yard of Mr. Dewhurst, at the bottom of Butler Street, and just emptied on his premises, he found a diamond ring of great value. It has eight diamonds set in a circle, with a larger one in the centre.
The police are endeavouring to discover the owner.

CRUELTY TO A DOG AT PRESTON
At the Preston Borough Police Court, this morning, James O'Neill was summoned for cruelly ill-treating a dog belonging to Thomas Kenny, tenant of the beerhouse known as the Old Royal George.
On Monday night, the dog, a collie, was lying by the beerhouse door, and the defendant, who came down North Road, was seen to kick it violently in the jaw. Kenny, in reply to the Bench, said the animal was a very quiet one. The defendant was fined 10s., and costs.
The matter was taken up by Edward Bones, officer of the R.S.P.C.A., who applied for and obtained a moiety of the fine for the police superannuation fund.

Respecting the Old Royal George, North Road, owned by Messrs. Matthew Brown and Co., for whom Mr. Blackhurst appeared, it was stated by Inspector Clayton that police supervision was difficult, as there was an exit from the brew-house into a passage behind, while three private houses had doors opening into the passage. There had been only two transfers since 1900, and no convictions.
Mr. Blackhurst: "I am told that one day you could not get in for customers?" Clayton replied, "There was a large crowd, I should think 14 or 15."
"You complain that the hop-room is dark. Do you know that hops should be kept in a dark room?"   Clayton replied, "Well if that's so, they are in a good place." (Loud laughter).
Mr. Blackhurst pointed out that the rent was £25 a year and contended that the house was doing a better trade than a house a few yards lower down, which was not opposed. The owners would undertake to make any desired improvement."
Wm. Dewhurst, general dealer, was called, and gave evidence in support of the house.

This article doesn't relate to this beerhouse, but it does relate to the licensee who took over in 1851, Robert Baynes. He had formerly been at the Wheatsheaf in Lancaster, and his probable reason for leaving. The offence was committed in early April, and he appeared in the Census of that year in Preston.

the licence was renewed.

On this occasion it was reported that

There have been several instances
where a 'fictitious' name has been
used in court cases, presumably in
an attempt to avoid bad publicity.
