The following is taken from "A History of St. Mary's, Friargate, written in 1967 by James Roe.
"Fr Alex Leigh, alias John Layton, came to St. Mary's in 1728. It was this Priest which bought the property in Friargate and used the house for Sunday Mass when trouble was about.
There was an Inn next door called 'The Crown and Thistle' and when the pursuivants were about, the people would quickly slip out at the back and the men sit down to their tankards of ale which would be on the tables, and carry on their conversations at the Inn, just as if nothing had happened."
Contributed by Jeremy Rowlands, proprietor of the Continental Hotel and Moorbrook Inn, North Road, and others.
Thanks Jeremy.

DEATH: On Wednesday, se'enight, Mrs. Blackburn,

John Darlington, was on Thursday last, was committed for trial
at the Sessions, charged with stealing a sack and a quantity of hops
from the Crown and Thistle public house in Friargate. The prisoner
sold one half of the hops to a retail brewer in North Street, and he was
offering the other half for sale to the landlord of the Bowling Green
in Friargate, when he was apprehended by George Holt, a constable.
The prisoner is the son of the late celebrated Tommy Darlington,
of dying speech and match-selling notoriety.

CONVICTION UNDER THE BEER ACT.
Yesterday, at the Town Hall, John Craven, keeper of the Rose and Crown beer house in Friargate, was convicted before Alderman Mounsey and Alderman Troughton, in the penalty of 40s plus costs for selling ale at hours when such a sale is restricted by the Act.
Preston Chronicle 23rd March 1833
I believe that the above John Craven was the son of James and Nancy Craven, born 1805 and died 1845. In 1836 he married Agnes Lancaster.
The 1841 Census shows John as an innkeeper at an un-named property on Friargate, with his wife and three children.
In 1845, following John's death, Agnes married James Rigby, who at the time was landlord at the Sir William Wallace at 5, Canal Street.
