And another account:
THE DELIGHTFUL DAUGHTERS: Margaret Satterthwaite, Isabella Satterthwaite, and Ann Shorrock, were brought up charged, the two former defendants with having entered the house of Mr. Cornelius Satterthwaite, the Devonshire Arms beerhouse, Canal Street, on Monday last, during his absence, and doing a great amount of damage by breaking bottles, jugs, glasses, etc, and throwing articles about the house; and the last named defendant, who is servant to the Misses Satterthwaite, was charged with riotous and disorderly conduct, and attempting to rescue them from the custody of PC Atkinson. Mr. Watson, who appeared for the prosecution, said the two daughters of Mr. Satterthwaite took every opportunity of going to his house in his absence and creating a disturbance, using foul language to the persons who lived there. On Monday, they went there again, and while the housekeeper went out for a policeman, they broke a large number of bottles, glasses, etc., and had thrown knives and forks about the house. They also broke open the money drawer.
Mr. Satterthwaite was away; but it was notintended to presss for any severe punishment, although the defendants ought to know better than to act as they had done. He asked the Bench to look upon the matter leniently, and to call upon the defendants to appear that day week.
Betsy Gardner, Mr. Satterthwaite's housekeeper, was then called, and corroborated the statement of Mr. Watson. PC Atkinson deposed that when he went to the house he saw that great damage had been done. Broken bottles and glasses were lying about in all directions.
Mr. Blackhurst, who appeared for the defendants, said they had no objection to the remand, and they were dismissed on promising to appear again on Wednesday next.
