Preston Chronicle 29th April 1865
*
Mr. Gibbons, barrister, asked for the renewal of Sir John Franklin Inn, Pole Street, owned by Richard Higham, Manchester, and tenanted by Thos. Gregson. Inspector Clayton said the house had been transferred seven times since 1900.
Answering Mr. Gibbons, Clayton said a good trade was done. "Your house,"  he added, "is a very good one with the present tenant."
When Warrant Officer Williamson was giving evidence as to the number of customers in the house, the clerk stated the smallest number he had ever found.
Williamson, "Empty". (laughter)  This was the best house of those objected to in this particular district.
Mr. Gibbons said if it was to be a question of the survival of the fittest, he relied on the police evidence in support of the retention of the licence.
Lancashire Evening Post   14th February 1907
