IT IS PRESUMED that it adopted that name after the
one shown on Kuerden's map of 1689 ceased to use it.

SOME MEMORIES OF THE COUNTY WINE STORES

The County Wine Store Friargate was owned by Reg Dawson and before that his father. My father George Suddell was the Manager of both the pub and the off licence which was accessed from Bambers Yard. They had a Christmas club where customers bought stamps and then exchanged them for their Christmas tipple. Further down Bambers yard was the entrance to where they bottled there own beer, Guinness, Sherry, Port, Champagne and they also made their own cordial by crushing fruit. I remembered they sold Horlicks in cups that had solid small handles. Barrels of spirit were kept in the Bonded warehouse on Strand road and the docks until the duty had been paid.
The Long bar had the till half way down and it revolved so there was access from both sides. Part of the bar sold cocktails and I recall there was a cocktail glass sign above the pubs doorway on Friargate called a Roxy cocktail. They had music playing in the background from a Grundig reel to reel tape recorder and on the opposite wall to the bar was a black and white TV set into the wood panelling.
That’s about all I remember as I contracted Poliomyelitis in 1953 and was in different homes and only got home in the holidays and that's when Dad took me to work with him.

them that he has REMOVED TO THE OLD KING'S HEAD INN,

Friargate, where he purposes keeping none but the best selected

SPIRITS, Home-brewed ALE, &c., &c.

E.B. wishes to call the particular attention of Farmers attending

Preston Market to his extensive Stabling, Yard, Granary, and 

every other accomodation required by them.

The King's Head Concert Hall, open on Saturday and Monday

evenings, under the superintendance of Blackoe Brothers,

combined with every novelty in Songs, Glees, Madrigals, &c., 

and supported by the first talent of the day.
