NOTICE TO BREWERS, INNKEEPERS
William RABY, is retiring from the Hop and Spirit Business,
takes this opportunity of returning his most sincere thanks
to his friends for all past favours to the late firm of
William Raby & Co,
and begs to recommend Mr. John Rogers as successor,
who will carry on the HOP and Vinegar trade on the premises.
It could be that the pub was named after someone in the
licensed trade. This is one example of who it might be.

Note the incidence of the name 'Raby' in this advert.
Clearly some connection with this house - perhaps owned it?
'College' is College Farm at Hothersall, where James Raby was farming in 1851 census.
