In 1852, a Mr. Sergeant took a room in
the "Queen Adelaide Hotel" New Hall

but the venture came to an end in 1857.

John Blackledge and wife Maria (nee Conkey) died in 1879 due to the after affects of a boating tragedy on a trip to France. Their 2 eldest daughters Margaret and Martha's husbands (James Helme and John Sim) took over the Queen Adelaide. Their two youngest children, Henry and Maria (my gt grandmother) still lived with them at the Queen Adelaide.
ReplyDeleteThe next landlord, Henry Sharples was married to John Blackledge's sister, Margaret who died 1871. Henry then went on to marry Ellen nee Rutter
ReplyDeleteJoanne, It's so good of you to add the details above, but looking at my website, the complex issue of the Sharples, Blackledges, Sim and Helme are so confusing.
DeleteHave you established a complete picture of the families? This is a classic example of how a pub has stayed within a family for a lengthy period, and I'd love to learn more. If you have further details, please email me at srh.steve@aol.co.uk Many thanks.
The first landlord you have, John Sergeant, was married to Margaret nee Blackledge
