ALLEGED MONEY ROBBERY
At the Police Court, on Tuesday, a middle-aged man, named Joseph Gillespie, was charged with stealing 4 shillings, belonging to Thomas Atherton, the notorious "Star-gazer".
Mr. Watson appeared for the prosecution, and said that Atherton was an old acquaintance of Mr. Dunn (the Chief Constable), but now stood in a different position from that in which he is ordinarily placed. Atherton said he was a labourer, but had no regular place of abode.
He was at the Weavers' Arms on Saturday night, when the prisoner came in and asked him several times to pay for a glass of ale. He declined to do so, saying that he was a big man and "qualifider" (laughter) to pay than he was. The prisoner then rushed at him, and a jug was broken in the scuffle. The landlord insisted on being paid for the jug, and the prisoner said Atherton had broken it, and must pay. Atherton said he would not, and the prisoner then rushed on him, tore out his pocket, which contained 4 shillings, and afterwards offered him 1 shilling back.
The defence was that the money had been taken for the purpose of compelling Atherton to pay for the jug. The prisoner was committed for trial at the quarter sessions.

BREWSTER SESSIONS
Mr. A. J. Watson, for the Chief Constable, said the tenant of the Weavers' Arms, Manchester Road, had told the police the average sales were 1.5 barrels of beer, 8 - 10 dozen half bottles, and 6 bottles of spirits a week. Average attendance on seven visits by police was twelve.
The house was structurally sound but bore signs of prolonged neglect and the sanitary accommodation was bad.
Mr. Desmond Bailey, for the owners of the Weavers' Arms called evidence that over the year the average barrelage was three. Since the tenant gave his figures to the police, business had improved.
The tenant, Richard Iddon, said he went out to work because it was a waste of time staying in during the days, and his wife was able to manage.
