SALE BY PRIVATE TREATY
BEERHOUSE - Lawson Street, called Bakers'
Arms, occupied by Miss Harrison.
Dwelling-house, No. 31 Lawson Street.
Preston Chronicle 26th October 1872
*
Henry Monk, landlord of the Butchers' Arms, Lawson Street,
was charged with selling beer during prohibited hours on the 13th
June. The case was remanded for a week for the appearance of a
witness.
Preston Chronicle 4th July 1874
This could be an example of a common practice, where a defendant,
by a 'slip of the tongue' gives the wrong name of his establishment
to avoid bad publicity. It happened too often for it to be coincidence.
                                                                  personal comment S.H.
*
Henry Monks, landlord of the Bakers' Arms, Lawson Street, Preston, has been fined 40s and costs for permitting drunkenness in his house. One night recently a police officer found on the defendant's premises, a number of boys and girls, 14 or 15 years old, all of whom were drunk. Two of these gave evidence that they and two companions - four children in all, drunk among them two gallons of ale in two hours.

THE FOLLOWING WAS TAKEN FROM A REPORT ON
THE CASE OF A MURDER THAT WAS COMMITTED OUTSIDE
THE BAKERS' ARMS IN 1883:
"The scene of the crime was the Bakers' Arms, a small
beershop in Lawson Street. In this locality many of the
Irish in town have taken up their residence, and the
beershop named appears to be a resort of the Irish
inhabitants. In the tragedy enacted on Monday afternoon
both the victim and the assailant are natives of the Emerald Isle"
Preston Chronicle 8th September 1883
A FULL ACCOUNT OF THE MURDER
IS BELOW THE CENSUS REPORTS, BELOW.

And the following newspaper clipping was from a 20th century newspaper,
given to me by the late Brian Reeder:

    1. Thanks Pete. Before I start adding anything, can I just clarify that you're talking about Anthony Henry? The name 'Henry' crops up several times. It's makes a great story if it is!
