The "Mountain Stag" was a nickname of a local

athlete, named Lang. His nephew was the landlord

in 1869. He could have been there for a number

of years, but it seems that it could have gone by

that name before he took it.

A 'sports day' was held on the bowling greens of the
above; hurdling, walking matches, leaping, running 
matches, etc.

Among the "Dons" of the day present were Seward, 
the "American Wonder"; Cook of London; Clarke of 
Oldham; Lang, the "Mountain Stag"..............

was refused on the grounds that the landlord, Thomas

Lang, had allowed habitual use of the premises by 

prostitutes.
