THE SORROWS OF A PUBLICAN'S WIFE
Michael Dunn, landlord of the Park Road Inn,
was summoned for the desertion of his wife,
Mary Ann Dunn. They had been married for
25 years and were happy together until five
years ago, when he began to abuse her. After
assaulting her early last December, he
persuaded her to withdraw a summons she took
out against him, but on the 10th December, he
ordered her to leave the house, and she didn't
go back until the 10th March, when she went to
see him. He refused to do anything for her, and
put her out of the house.
The Inn was her property as well as two houses,
but the deeds were in his name. They had had
four children, of whom a girl, 16 years of age,
was the only one who did not earn a living. She
herself, could not do any work.
The defendant's request for an adjournment
was refused, and he was ordered to contribute
15 shillings a week towards his wife's maintenance.
