30 and 40 horses, and other appurtenances to the
said INN or Public House.

ASSAULT
On Monday last, Mr. Samuel Wood, of the New Cock
Inn, appeared at the Town Hall, to answer a summons
alleging an assault on John Beardswood.
The complainant said that on Thursday, the first day
of polling, he was at the bottom of New Cock Yard,
when Mr. Wood came up to him, and without
provocation on his part, struck him with a stick
and broke his arm.
A party of the Blues, whose principal rendez-vous
was in the Cock Yard, said he came up to him and
severely kicked and struck him, threatening to kill
him - so that for some time he was insensible.
A woman who lived close by said she saw the defendant
going away from the spot, but did not see the blow struck.
Several witnesses were examined for the defence, but
did not disprove the fact sworn to, and the defendant was
bound over to answer the charge at the Sessions.

FIRING UP FOR CHRISTMAS?
Joseph Wilson (50) New Cock Inn, Preston,
was fined 5s. at Preston today for allowing his chimney to be on fire at 6.20pm on Sunday 1st inst. It was stated that soot fell
into Fishergate and caused annoyance to people.
Mr. H. Fazackerley, for Wilson, suggested that the defendant was firing up for Christmas.

Taken from a Preston Guardian in the 1940's
It shows the landlord, Richard 'Dick' Sumner, inspecting
the enclosure for cocks used in cock-fighting.
It was rumoured locally that when the inn was demolished to make way for Boots the Chemist, there was still a Cock-pit
on the first floor of the pub - as was this enclosure.

ReplyDeleteThe Lancasters in 1851 and 1861 were the ancesters of Preston Mayor John William Taylor 1890-1972, who ran Page & Taylors timber yard on the docks.
