John Walmsley, "mine host" in 1818/19 married Jane Hulme at St John's Church in 1811. After his death in 1819 Jane ran the pub on her own until 1829 when she married John Mayor, who then took over the pub for a couple of years. He had been the landlord of The Derby Arms (but which one?). "On the 7th inst. Mr. John Mayor, late of the Derby's Arms public-house, to Mrs. Jane Walmsley, of the White Lyon, Sykes, Preston." Published in the Lancaster Gazette, Sat., 18 Apr 1829. By 1834 John Mayor was listed in the 1834 Pigot's Directory, under Retailers of Beer, at 43 North Road.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, Glenn. From a process of elimination from the 3 Derby Arms we've had, it has to be the one in Back Lane (now Market Street). The Ribbleton Lane one didn't appear until the 1860's, and the Lord Street one acquired the name when the Back Lane premises were demolished. I also had a gap in the tenancy between 1827 and 1830. Handy! Can't establish where 43 North Road was, butI'll let you know once I do, Thanks again.
