FLY BOAT TAVERN #
1 Bridge Lane (Marsh Lane)
*
I don't know where this was, but the address would suggest close to Ladywell Street
and the Canal (hence the name) - possibly a predecessor of the BOATSMANS' ARMS?
MINE HOSTS:
1851 John Proctor
1851 Alice Oliverson
1853 Thomas Turner (John Turner - 1853 Oakey's Directory)
1857 John Taylor
*
NOTES: - I think that these premises could be synonymous with the "TACKLERS' ARMS."
- John Proctor was listed at 1 Shepherd Street in the 1851 census, so he must have been
at the Fly Boat Tavern in the early part of the year.

FIRE AT PUBLIC HOUSE
On Monday afternoon last, as John Taylor of the
FLY-BOAT BEERHOUSE, in Bridge Lane, was
painting the window frames of his house outside,
he imagined someone was breaking the windows
of one of the upper rooms by throwing stones.
He soon saw, however, that they were broken
from the inside, and that smoke was issuing from
the shattered panes. He went up a ladder and saw
a fire raging in the room. The fire-brigade turned
out, but by the time they arrived, neighbours had
all but extinguished the fire.
All contents of the room including a bed and bedding,
and two chests of clothes, were consumed in the blaze,
which was thought to have been caused by an over-heating
chimney igniting aq beam or a joist.
